PREPAREDNESS / BUYING GUIDE

Make an Emergency Cooking Plan

A stove, fuel, ignition source, cookware, and water need to work together.

Choose Where You Will Cook

Start with an appropriate location and the manufacturer’s directions for the exact appliance. Fuel-burning equipment needs the conditions specified by its maker. Check local fire rules and restrictions before planning to use a flame.

Match Fuel and Equipment

Confirm the exact fuel type, connector, and compatible cookware. Do not assume similar-looking canisters or accessories fit. Check whether a starter, hose, regulator, or stand is included or sold separately.

Think About the Whole Meal

Plan around food you can prepare with the water, fuel, and cookware available. Account for cleanup, serving utensils, and storage after opening food. Ready-to-eat options can reduce how much cooking equipment you need.

Practice Before Packing

Set up the equipment under normal conditions, read its storage instructions, and keep the manual accessible. Ferro rods and other fire-starting tools need suitable materials and practice; including one in a kit does not guarantee an easy fire.

Put the Plan Before the Purchase.

Choose one gap in your supplies, compare suitable options, and learn the equipment before you store it.
