Mountainsmith Tour EVO Lumbar Pack Review

Tour EVO carries nine liters around the waist and offers optional shoulder support. It is a more substantial lumbar setup than the small belt packs used for a phone and snack.

Nine liters worn at the waist is a different experience from a tiny running pouch. The Mountainsmith Tour EVO Lumbar Pack is designed for a fuller load, with compression, bottle pockets, and an accessory pouch helping organize the space.

That capacity is useful if you prefer leaving your back more open. It also makes belt fit and load management more important than they are with a few lightweight personal items.

Decide Whether the Waist Alone Is Enough

Mountainsmith offers compatibility with its separately sold Strapette shoulder harness and recommends that support for heavier loads. I’d include the harness in the comparison if the planned equipment is approaching the upper end of the pack’s suggested load.

That changes the total price and carrying arrangement. It may still suit you well, but it should be compared as the complete setup you intend to use, rather than as a waist pack alone.

  • Volume: Nine liters.
  • Organization: Two main pockets and a removable accessory pouch.
  • Load adjustment: Compression system and forward-pull waistbelt.
  • Distinct feature: Reversible blaze-orange front panel.

Accessible Water and Small Equipment

The side pockets accommodate suitable bottles up to one liter, and the modular pouch can move to compatible positions. Those features are handy when the items need to remain easy to reach throughout a walk.

I’d check access while wearing the pack, not only with it sitting on a table. A zippered pocket behind the hip may be convenient for one person and awkward for another, depending on fit and mobility.

A Good Alternative Only If You Like the Carrying Position

Tour EVO is worth considering for someone who deliberately prefers lumbar carry and wants more than minimal storage. A conventional backpack may feel simpler to someone who needs more shoulder support anyway.

I’d try the intended water and equipment load, then compare the waist-only and supported arrangements. Its value is the nine-liter lumbar system and flexible pocket placement, not the idea that waist carry is automatically more comfortable for everyone.
