Mountainsmith Zerk 13 UL Daypack w/2L Bladder Review

Water equipment is sometimes another purchase after choosing a pack. The Mountainsmith Zerk 13 UL Daypack w/2L Bladder includes a two-liter bladder, giving you a more defined hydration setup from the start.

Its thirteen-liter main volume and vest-style shoulder layout suggest a focused day load. I’d compare it for active outings where water access and a few reachable supplies take priority over carrying bulky equipment.

The Included Bladder Changes the Comparison

A reservoir, hose port, and magnetic hose keeper give the water system a place in the design. You’ll still need to become familiar with filling, cleaning, and drying the actual bladder.

Try that routine at home before leaving it packed for a long time. A convenient drinking hose is less appealing if the owner avoids cleaning the parts afterward.

• Main storage: Thirteen liters.
• Included hydration: Two-liter TSI bladder.
• Front access: Four large shoulder-strap mesh pockets.
• Support: Wide padded straps and two adjustable sternum straps.

Shoulder Pockets Reduce the Need to Stop

The maker describes space for suitably sized bottles and phones on the straps. That gives you ways to keep a few items in front while the rest stays in the main compartment.

I’d test the loaded front pockets for arm clearance and retention. Several small items bouncing against the chest could make an otherwise convenient feature distracting. Choose what belongs there rather than filling every pocket automatically.

Keep It in the Daypack Role

The waistbelt pockets, side bottle pockets, and front mesh section create several storage choices, but they don’t turn a compact pack into a large-load carrier. A wet outer layer and extra water can quickly change the available room.

The Zerk 13 is worth considering when you want an included reservoir and front storage together. If you already have a favorite bladder, compare whether that inclusion adds value. I’d choose it for a defined day’s equipment and comfortable access, with the complete water-and-gear load tried on before the trip.
